Reading & Writing
Literacy development is an important part of therapy because students with oral language issues often need help with reading and writing. Children with language impairments risk falling behind academically, especially in reading and writing skills.
Anna uses the Wilson Fundations® program for students in grades K-3. This program lays the groundwork for life-long literacy. The program emphasizes the following skills:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics/ word study
- High-frequency word study
- Reading fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension strategies
- Handwriting
- Spelling
Anna uses Linda Mood Bell's Visualizing and Verbalizing® program to improve reading comprehension. This program is for students who struggle to understand what they read. Using this program, students learn to make mental images as they read. Anna teaches students to make "movies in their brains." Anna also uses this program to help students understand verbal information as well.
Anna uses Social Thinking® tools to target language, thinking, and social communication skills. Students learn to "tell their story," recognize the emotions/intentions of others and understand perspective.
